5 common causes of foot pain (and what you can do about it)

Our feet are the foundation not just for our bodies, but for our lives.

The 26 bones and 33 joints in our feet work in symphony… Carrying us through each day…

Determining our ability to walk, work, and play….

Our ability to enjoy a quality life.

As Joseph Pilates, famously said...

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.

Full body alignment, posture, and gait all begin with proper foot function…

Impacting the knees, hips, spine, head, and everything between.

So it’s VITAL that we care for our feet and address problems when they arise.

Below we’ll go through some of the most common foot pain causes, and steps to deal with them.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is generally felt in the heel and under-foot

A sharp pain or an ongoing ache is common... and is often most intense after long periods of rest (such as when getting out of bed in the morning).

It’s caused by straining the tissue which connects the heel and toes.

Often as a result of tight muscles, high-impact exercise, and poor foot support in shoes.

Treatment normally includes rest, icing to reduce inflammation, gentle stretching, and supportive insoles.

High Arches

Without proper support, high arches can cause pain in the ball of the foot and heel.

This is mainly due to the foot’s inability to absorb shock properly.

Left unchecked, high arches can also lead to problems in the ankles, knees, hips and back.

High arches are generally a result of genetics... but can also develop due to disease, trauma, and certain exercises.

The main treatment is to add arch support insoles, like the award-winning Soul Insoles.

Morton's Neuroma

Nerves in the foot can become irritated or damaged, resulting in a burning pain or numbness.

This is often caused by wearing tight footwear or high heels... as well as running and activities which cause excess stress on the feet. Other foot problems, such as high arches, can also cause Morton's Neuroma.

Treatment includes supportive insoles, physical therapy, and surgery in severe cases.

Runner’s Knee (aka Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome)

Runner’s Knee is a broad term which describes pain in the front of the knee and knee cap

It’s a common problem in sports where the knees are intensely stressed, but can also occur due to muscle weakness or tightness, imbalances, flat feet, injury... and even excess sitting.

Treatment varies depending on the nature of the specific case... including rest, physical therapy, surgery in rare cases, and insoles to improve alignment and support.

Over Pronation

Over pronation is one of the most common foot problems, and can cause heel, arch, Achilles, and ankle pain

It can also impact full body alignment… leading to problems throughout the body.

Imbalance, bad posture, and gait abnormalities are common in people with over pronation.

Over Pronation occurs for genetic reasons (e.g flat feet)... And can also develop from wearing unsupportive shoes, overuse injuries, obesity, or pregnancy.

Insoles are the most common treatment. Wearing more supportive shoes and stretching can also help to ease symptoms.
